Car spotting apps: the 2026 comparison

Ten car spotting apps compared on what their App Store listings actually say: photo identification, rarity system, languages, ratings and release date. We make Carspot, so this comparison is not neutral, but every fact can be checked on the app's listing, and we also say when another app may suit you better.

What is car spotting?

Car spotting is the hobby of finding and photographing remarkable cars in public places: in the street, at car meets, outside hotels or at races. Car spotting apps add what a camera roll cannot: identifying the model, keeping a collection, and comparing it with other spotters.

What sets Carspot apart

  • 16 languages, the most of any app in this table.
  • A rarity score set model by model from real data (production, price, age, power, brand), not a random card tier: a Ferrari Enzo is legendary because about 400 were built.
  • A catalogue of more than 25,000 models, from everyday cars to one-offs.
  • Licence plates blurred automatically before a spot is saved or published.
  • Free to play on iPhone and Android; the optional Gold subscription adds cosmetics, the map and statistics, never points.

When another app may suit you better

  • You want a location-based hunt for virtual car cards, Pokémon-style, rather than photos of real cars: AutoRadar.
  • You mostly want a car social network with car meets, events and tradable cards: CARFOOLY – The Club.
  • You mainly want to see on a public map where supercars were spotted recently: Car Spotting App or AutoRadar. Carspot keeps its map for Gold members and never shows another player's exact position.
  • You want a market value estimate for the car in front of you: Cardentify.
  • You are in the United States and want the largest App Store community today: MotorDex, Car Spotting App or Spotit have hundreds of US ratings, Carspot only a few. In France, CARFOOLY – The Club and AutoRadar currently have more App Store ratings than Carspot.
